Gynecology and Obstetrics

The Gynecology and Obstetrics department of Nicosia Polyclinic has a long tradition in providing excellent healthcare services to women. The department brings together individuals with expertise across a broad spectrum of women’s health- from obstetricians-gynecologists and anaesthetists to midwives and nurses- with the main objective of making a major contribution to the health of women.

From childhood to puberty, motherhood to menopause, maturity to old age, the lives of women around the world are a fascinating and complex journey filled with great joys and also suffering. From developmental problems to menstrual abnormalities, infertility to hormone deficiencies, premature labour to neonatal death, bladder problems to cancer, there are now amazing opportunities to make this journey better.

Our experienced obstetrician-gynecologists have been dealing effectively with a broad range of gynecological pathologies including menstrual irregularities, fertility problems, polycystic ovaries, prolapsed or cancer of the pelvic organs, endometriosis, incontinence of urine, fibroids and others.

In Nicosia Polyclinic, we offer the complete range of maternity healthcare services – our doctors, midwives and other clinical staff have expertise in supporting women through high risk and complex pregnancies, as well as through normal births. Our obstetricians will provide a complete package of close maternity care that includes antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care.

We do understand that the birth of your baby is one of the most important days in your lives. For that reason, we strive to do everything in order to have the most pleasant and comfortable experience possible and at the same time achieving the best results for both mother and baby. Our labour and delivery suites are designed and equipped in accordance to the latest European guidelines in order to provide a technologically advanced and safe environment.

Nursery

Babies born in Nicosia Polyclinic are nurtured for 2-3 days before their mothers are ready to go home. Our nursery consists of 8 simple cubicles and 2 incubators which provide vital support (oxygen, regulation of temperature etc) to neonates born prematurely, have low birth weight or present with neonatal jaundice.

The survival rates and long term outcomes of babies requiring incubation in Nicosia Polyclinic have been great. 24-hour paediatric input can be provided if needed or on request and our medical and nursing staff aim to encourage and empower parents during their stay.

Dr Andreas Shakallis, MD

Consultant Obstetrician-Gynecologist

Dr Shakallis is a hugely experienced obstetrician-gynecologist. Following his medical studies in the former USSR, he went through extensive training in various hospitals in Russia where he gained experience in various obstetric and gynecologic emergencies and in the management of rare conditions.

Dr Shakallis has enormous experience in managing the full range obstetric and gynecological condition. A competent surgeon, he is an expert in managing normal and abnormal pregnancies ensuring his patients do not undergo unnecessary procedures eg Caesarian sections, if not needed.

In Nicosia Polyclinic, Dr Shakallis collaborates closely with his colleague Dr Karaolis ensuring better outcomes for their patients. Dr Shakallis is a member of the Cyprus Medical Association and the Cyprus Gynecological Society.

Dr Antonis Karaolis, MD

Consultant Obstetrician-Gynecologist

Dr Karaolis graduated from the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thesalloniki and underwent postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology in various teaching hospitals in Thesalloniki. During his training he gained huge experience in managing various gynecologic and obstetric emergencies as well rarer conditions which required highly specialized treatment.

Dr Karaolis sees the full range of obstetrics and gynecology conditions and specializes in managing normal and abnormal pregnancies. He strongly believes that women should not go through unnecessary procedures eg Caesarian sections if not needed.

In Nicosia Polyclinic, Dr Karaolis collaborates closely with his colleague Dr Shakallis ensuring the best outcomes for their patients. He is a member of the Cyprus Medical Association and the Cyprus Gynecological Society.

Dr Svetlana Iacovidou, MD, PhD

Obstetrician-Gynecologist

Dr Iacovidou studied Medicine at the N. I. Pirogov Second Moscow Medical Institute (now known as the Russian State Medical University (RSMU)) in the former USSR from 1974-1980 and was awarded her MD with Honours (the gold medal distinction). After receiving her degree she did her pre-registration training and work at the 1st City Hospital of Moscow (Gradskaya) where she also specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She was involved in extensive research on gestational diabetes mellitus and gained vast experience in the management of obstetric and gynaecological emergencies as well as gynaecological oncology. She became an expert in conservative therapy of gynaecological disorders and also further trained in obstetrics at the Moscow Maternity Hospital N 10.

In Nicosia Polyclinic, Dr Iacovidou sees and treats a full range of obstetric and gynaecological conditions due to her extensive experience over the years. She has a great interest in Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) investigation (colposcopy) and therapy. She is a member of the Cyprus Medical Association and of the Cyprus Gynecological Society.

Dr Kypros Christofides, MD

Consultant Obstetrician-Gynecologist

Dr Christofides graduated from the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thesalloniki and underwent postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology in various teaching hospitals in Greece. During his training he gained huge experience in managing various gynecologic and obstetric emergencies as well rarer conditions which required highly specialized treatment.

Dr Christofides sees the full range of obstetrics and gynecology conditions and specializes in managing normal and abnormal pregnancies. He strongly believes that women should not go through unnecessary procedures eg Caesarian sections if not needed.

He is a member of the Cyprus Medical Association and the Cyprus Gynaecological Society.

Dr Marios Kleanthous, MD, PhD

Consultant Obstetrician-Gynecologist

Dr Kleanthous graduated from the University of Athens medical school in 1982. He then pursued further postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology in various big centers in South Africa including the famous University of Witwatersrand.

During his 8-year training in South Africa, he gained huge experience in managing various gynecologic and obstetric emergencies as well rarer conditions which required highly specialized treatment. He also specialized in laser treatment of premalignant lesions (dysplasia) of the cervix and has published many scientific articles on that technique.

Dr Kleanthous is a member of Fédération Internationale de Gynécologie et d’Obstétrique (FIGO) since 2001 and also of the Cyprus Medical Association and Cyprus Gynecological Society.
